Summer Ball

Last weekend it was the annual Summer Ball at the Sergeants' Mess, thus Craig was forced to dress up like a penguin once again! Still, he got his own back by using Sharon as a trampoline.

And here we are trying to look slightly less stupid...

Turkey!

Here are some pics from our recent trip to Turkey. We had a really good time, and we're already thinking about when we can go back!

We started off in Istanbul, which has a really nice historic centre. Highlights were the Blue Mosque (above), Aya Sofia (with an incredible dome and Byzantine mosaics, below), Topkapi Palace and Chora Church, although Sharon might rank the Turkish Delight shops as the number one attraction...

Then it was on to Ankara, via lake Abant, to the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and the Ataturk Memorial. Then down through Cappadocia, visiting the underground city of Derinkuyu and the cave-churches of Goreme - one of the highlights of the trip.

We carried on south via Konye, and Aspendos (with it's huge Roman theatre, below) to Antalya.

Then a number of Roman sites (including Termessos and Aphrodisias) lead us on to Ephesus.

We'd had a week of beautiful sunshine... Until we got to Pergamum, where the heavens opened while we were up on the acropolis. We actually got locked in the site, as the lightening was considered dangerous, so they stopped letting people in to the site -but forgot to let us out!

Then it was on to Troy, where Craig had great fun pretending to be Odysseus. Then a more sombre visit to Gallipoli. This is the Lone Pine Memorial.

Finally it was back to Istanbul, for some last minute sightseeing before flying home!

Now we just have 4,000 photos to sort out before our next trip in a few weeks!
