A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

Actually about 6 months ago in south east Asia...

Yes, you thought it would never come, but we're finally putting up our Cambodia piccies!

After 2 weeks in Vietnam and Laos, Cambodia was more or less just a long weekend around Siem Reap, to see the temples of Angkor.

Angkor Wat was the main thing we wanted to see but there's actually a much larger complex of temples spreading out for miles.

This was Ta Prohm, our favourite of the temples. Unlike most of the temples, Ta Prohm has been left more or less as it was when it was re-discovered. So, it's covered with trees, most of which have enormous roots snaking their way through the ruins. Some of you may recognise it from the Tomb Raider films and it was like being in a lost city from an Indiana Jones movie.

Angkor Thom was covered in towers, each with numerous faces carved on them. We're sure there was a very good reason for all the faces but we obviously stopped listening at that point. We had just spent two hours listening to our guide talk about a frieze so we felt entitled to switch off.
But they were very picturesque!

One evening, we went to see some traditional Apsara dancers. Their images are carved all over the Angkor temples, so the locals felt compelled to replicate the dancing to get a few extra pennies out of us tourists.

This was Bantay Srei, yet another of the Angkor Temples! This one is renowned for the intricacy of its carving. Shame not much of it is left standing.
Off to Turkey soon, hence we thought we'd better get a Cambodia post up, seeing as we went 6 months ago! We'll try and do better with Turkey, especially as we will be off to Tanzania 4 weeks later.
